Gurudwara Nada Sahib History & Pictures

Nada Sahib located on the scenic banks of River Ghaghar in the Panchkula district of Haryana and is a venue of high religious significance. Nada Sahib is located at a distance of 15 km from Chandigarh—the City of Gardens and is visited by devotees and tourists across the year.
Gurudwara Nada Sahib is a revered venue of worship and represents the religious sentiments and cultural attributes of the Sikh community. This is the center where Guru Gobind Singhji had taken rest after winning his battle against the Mughals. Along with hundreds of weary victorious Sikh soldiers, he had stayed in the premises of this gurudwara on his way back. Guru Gobind Singhji was proceeding to Anandpur Sahib from Paonta Sahib after winning the Battle of Bhangani in 1688.

Upon his arrival in the village, Guru Gobind Singhji and his warriors were warmly greeted by an ardent follower named Nadu Shah. Nadu Shah was connected with the lobana caste and served Guru Gobind Singhji with a lot of zest and enthusiasm. He belonged to the family of Baba Makhan Shah Labana, who used to reside in the adjoining village and helped Guru Gobind Singhji and his armies recover from the tiredness of their long journey. He offered them milk, food and other nourishment as long as they stayed in the gurudwara.

Guru Gobind Singhji was very pleased by his hospitality and reverence and showered his blessings on Nadu Shah. He also proclaimed that the gurudwara would be henceforth named after him and would be amongst the important Sikh centers of worship globally. He then blessed the venue and announced that all visitors who came to Gurudwara Nada Sahib, announced his name and offered prayers with devotion would have their wishes fulfilled.

Located on the foothills of the scenic Shivalik Hills, Gurudwara Nada Sahib remained an obscure place of worship-- until it was discovered by Bhai Motha Singh from a nearby village. He raised a platform at the very spot to perpetuate and pay testimony of Guru Gobind Singhji’s visit to the venue. There are no more historical recordings of the establishment of the Manji Sahib or what became of the devotee, Motha Singh.

This shrine was placed under the administration of Dharmarth Board of East Punjab States Union and Patiala in the year 1948 and was then taken over by the members of Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee in the year 1956. In due course of time, the original simple architectural framework of Manji Sahib has been transformed into a double storeyed domed structure. It has a large rectangular meeting hall, a spacious brick paved courtyard, rooms for pilgrims and a complex for Guru ka Langar. The gurudwara is also home to a museum which showcases remnants and facts connected with the Sikh history.

This gurudwara is dominated by a holy flag which flies aloft a 105 feet (32 m) high staff placed at one side of the courtyard (next to the old shrine). Community meals, prayer sessions and religious gatherings take place every day of the year –with full moon nights being the most important days for worship.
